Bush Shade and Leaf Litter: Roofs Under the Waitākere Canopy

Water stays under the moss rather than running to the spouting and finds its way under tile edges at the laps — a slow, diffuse ingress that shows on ceilings as spreading damp rather than a drip point.

Removing moss without addressing tile porosity is a one-year fix. Spores are airborne from every tree fern within 50 metres, and if the tile surface is open they re-establish within a season. A penetrating concrete sealer applied after a thorough clean can extend the treatment interval to five or more years and reduce re-colonisation significantly.

Leaf blockages and spouting geometry

Standard 100 mm half-round aluminium spouting handles normal suburban leaf fall reasonably well. Under the Waitākere canopy it does not. Kauri leaves float through; tree fern fibre clumps at every join and outlet and ferments into a paste. Two factors make bush spouting fail faster than its nominal capacity suggests. Falls on older houses are often shallow — a 1-in-100 grade barely moves debris along. And the number of downpipes is sized for open rainfall, not for the additional load of branch-tip drip during heavy events. A roof section draining 60 square metres in open rain is effectively handling 80 or more once canopy drip adds to it.

Clearing bush spouting every twelve months is not enough. Every six months, or after any significant storm that drops branches, is closer to what the site demands.
